Alright, I admit it- I have a growing obsession with coconut oil. But can you blame me? It’s many uses and health benefits are too glorious to skip out on. Coconut oil is fortified with a plethora of nutrients and vitamins that are vital to our overall health, and I use it, literally, from head to toe. It’s proven to promote hair growth and prevent dandruff by providing our hair with the moisture it needs, which in turn repairs damaged strands.

I have thick, coarse and perpetually dry hair. If you have similar hair or hair with heat and/or chemical damage, you’ll greatly benefit from using coconut oil. Even if you’re blessed with a perfect mane, you can always up your hair game just a tad by slicking on some coconut.

Here’s the quick and painless process:

Make sure you purchase coconut oil that is 100% pure, virgin rax, and organic. It should NOT be bleached or altered in any way. Also,

be sure to purchase the oil in a glass enclosure to ensure that it is free of paragons (common with plastic bottles). Glass also gives it a longer shelf life.

You can start with either dry or lightly dampened hair. Scoop out a spoonful of oil. It’ll feel compacted and hard, but it quickly dissolves once in your hands. Rub the oil between your palms- I recommend doing this over the sink cause it will get drippy.

As it liquifies, begin working it into the ends of your hair, continuously running your fingers through so its evenly distributed. Keep working the oil through your hair up to your roots and lightly massage it into your scalp.

Once you’ve covered all your hair, simply twist it up into a loose bun.

For the best results, I leave it in for at least 30 minutes. I usually use this time productively and clean my apartment or run errands. If your hair is severely damaged, you can leave it in over night. As a tip, wrap your head with plastic wrap to prevent any mess.

When you’re ready, hop in the shower and wash it out with your favorite shampoo. Make sure to thoroughly rinse and wash out the oil completely from your hair and scalp.

Voila! You’re left with soft, silky, and yummy smelling hair! You can do this as often as you need or like too.

Here are just a few benefits of using coconut oil on your hair:

Vitamin E helps rebuild protein in hair lost through styling

Keeps hair shiny and builds strength

Can be used as a deep conditioning treatment

Has a long shelf life, unlike other hair care products that quickly oxidize and turn rancid

Can be used as a medicinal treatment for dandruff and scalp complaints

Smells lush and tropical, which means your hair will, too!
